Digital European Citizenship Project: Society and Media
The aim of this project is for students to weigh the facts and test the evidence behind online news stories that are current in Ireland and publish their findings on their own news website.
Rationale
Being able to source reliable information about what is going on in your country is an important element of being an active and informed citizen for our students and this involves questioning how different media outlets cover the topic, from the style of language used to the reliability of their facts. They express their understanding by writing an article explaining their findings about the news story they have chosen to investigate.
Learner Profile
Young Adults from age 17 to 20 who have an interest in the digital environment in which they exist and how it impacts and influences the society in which they live.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of this course students will have
- learned to spot fake news using a checklist of criteria
- compared different news sources and rated their reliability
- investigated a news story and checked the facts
- prepared an article for publication on a class website
